The Ten Lepers

Luke 17:12-19
Leviticus 13, 14

The story of the ten lepers is familiar to a bunch of people.

Ten lepers call out to Jesus from afar as He enters a village. They call out, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us! The lepers have some kind of skin disease, and being so, are separated from society, per Jewish law. Jesus told them to show themselves to the priests and obediently, they started walking. Along the way, their leprosy disappears and one, seeing his healing, returns to Jesus shouting, Praise God, I’m healed! Luke tells us the man fell face down on the ground at Jesus’ feet and thanked Him for what He had done. Luke also mentions the returning leper was a Samaritan. Jesus then proceeds to ask some rhetorical questions; ones that we now probably consider to be Socratic.

Didn’t I heal ten men? Where are the other nine? Does only this foreigner return to give glory to God?

Then Jesus said to the man, Stand up and go. Your faith has made your well.

Why was Jesus angry or disappointed with the other nine lepers?
Did He not say, “Go show yourselves to the priests”? Were they not just following His instructions? Wasn’t the returning leper being disobedient?
Why is it a big deal the man is a foreigner, a Samaritan at that?

Days of our Lives

I can remember sitting in elementary school in the 80s wondering what life would be like in the year 2010. I would imagine a world with flying cars, teleportation, and food in pill form. It’s been almost 30 years since then, and I suppose if you use my imagination as a standard, not too much has changed. We still drive cars on roads and eat food like we always did. But maybe we should step outside of our imaginations for a minute and take a look at what has actually happened in our lifetimes. At the risk of sounding really old, it blows me away at how much has changed in 30 years. From the way we communicate, to how we obtain information, to the way we work and learn each day, there have been incredible changes.

I know we’ve heard this before, but it never ceases to make my heart overflow. When God instituted the Passover for the Jewish people, he asked them as slaves of Egypt to smear the blood of a young lamb on the wooden doorposts of their homes. That blood on the wood would serve as a sign for the angel to pass over that home and spare the firstborn. For roughly 1400 years, the people of Israel continued that practice year in and year out. They would smear the blood of lambs on the door, always waiting for the one lamb that would serve as the final sacrifice for their sins.

Fourteen hundred years after that first passover, another lamb celebrated a last supper by saying that this was his body broken for us, and that this cup represented a new covenant. It was 1400 years later on a hill called Calvary, God’s chosen lamb, His only begotten son, served as the final lamb by allowing his blood to be smeared on the wooden posts of a cross. Time had passed. Generations had come and gone. So many changes took place, but the promise of God never did. It’s amazing how man who lives for just a few decades on this earth can change so often, but the promise of an eternal God continues to last.

Here’s an exercise that I think we should all try, and I hope you’ll respond to this post. How has being a Christian changed during your lifetime? Maybe there have been changes to how you are perceived, or what society accepts or frowns upon. Maybe you have seen changes in society’s morals or what is considered acceptable. Think about things you see on TV or hear on the radio that you may not have seen or heard years ago. Think about perceptions of Christ, the Christian, or someone who is “religious.” Have perceptions of the world changed? Have Christians changed? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
